Early dismissal on Wed, Sept 7 and Thurs, Sept 8th at 12:30pm

Dear Park Hill Elementary Community,

It is our priority to keep you informed of incidents related to student safety. Due to the anticipated high temperatures on Wednesday 9/7 and Thursday 9/8, we have decided to send students home at 12:30 p.m. on those days. This is being done for the safety of our students and staff. All students will be sent home with asynchronous lessons for the afternoon.

There will NOT be YMCA afternoon care due to the heat (they will still offer AM services)

We WILL have bus service for those approved students at 12:30pm.

We are asking that all students be picked up between 12:30 - 12:40pm.

If your pickup plans are different than normal, please coordinate with the student's teacher and the front office (ann_kurth@dpsk12.net).

As you may know, our building is on the list to have air conditioning installed, but that work has not yet been completed.

When temperatures rise to these levels, heat exhaustion is always a possibility, whether kids are outside or in a building that isn’t air conditioned. Here are some signs of heat exhaustion.

  • Cool, moist skin with goosebumps when in the heat

  • Heavy sweating

  • Faintness

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

  • Weak, rapid pulse

  • Low blood pressure upon standing

  • Muscle cramps

  • Nausea

  • Headache

While these signs do not automatically indicate a trip to a doctor, the person should rest in a shady area or in an air conditioned building, drink cool fluids such as water or sports drinks, and take a cool shower, if possible, or put towels soaked in cool water on their skin.

We would like to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students are our number one priority. The forecast is for temperatures to drop back to manageable temperatures by Friday and we expect to return to our normal schedule at that time. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Ken Burdette
